SPY PARTY GAME

The spy party game where one friend is lying

This is the classic spy party game: everyone at the table knows where you are, except the spy. You question each other, the spy bluffs, and the group has to vote out the right person before the spy works out the location. On this website it is called Spyfall and it is free for 3-12 players.

The roles: civilians and one spy

Civilians get a card with the secret location and a role there. At an airport you might be the pilot, a passenger or the security officer. One player gets the spy card instead, with no location at all.

The location comes from collections you choose. The free one-phone game bundles 12 collections, from Everyday places like a hospital or an airport to themed sets such as Spooky and Galactic Empire. Browse every place and role in the Spyfall locations list.

Questions are the whole game

Players take turns asking one person a question. Good questions fit many places but have a specific answer at this one: "What would you wear here?", "Would you come here for work or for fun?" The answer should convince the group without handing the spy the location.

The spy answers too, using whatever the conversation has given away so far. A strange answer is a reason for a follow-up question, not instant proof. Need inspiration? Here are question ideas for the spy game.

Voting and catching the spy

Anyone can call a vote during the discussion, or the timer brings the group to the vote. Online, a strict majority of all players has to agree; on one phone, the player with the most votes is accused. A tie or a wrong accusation means the spy wins.

A caught spy is not finished yet: they get one final guess at the location. Guess right and the spy still wins. That is why civilians should never name the place, even when they are sure who the spy is.

Ways to play the spy game

Play on one phone when you are together, in a private online room when you are apart, or with the Spyfall app on iPhone, iPad and Android. Prefer words to places? The same idea works as a word imposter game.

  • One phone: pass the device for private cards, then talk face to face.
  • Online room: one browser per player and your own voice call.
  • Mobile app: the separate Spyfall app for iOS and Android.

Questions

How do you win as the spy?

The spy wins if the group accuses the wrong player, cannot agree, or catches the spy but then sees them correctly guess the location in the final guess.

How long is a round of the spy game?

You choose the discussion timer when you set up the game. Most groups play rounds of a few minutes and then a rematch, which keeps the scores and rotates the first asker.

Do you need cards to play the spy party game?

No. The website deals the cards, runs the timer and keeps score. You only need a phone, or one browser per player online.
