UNDERCOVER WORD GAME

The undercover word game: spot the odd word out

In an undercover word game one player is secretly working with a different word than everyone else. Clue by clue the group tries to spot the odd one out, while the undercover player tries to blend in. This website has two ways to play it, free for 3-12 players.

Two ways to play undercover

Both versions use the same clue rounds and vote. The difference is what the undercover player knows.

  • Undercover with a similar word (Similar Words): the undercover player gets a related word and does not know they are undercover. Pure deduction for everyone.
  • Undercover with no word (Secret Words): the undercover player sees no word, knows their role and has to bluff. If caught, they get one guess at the word to win anyway.

Giving clues that do not give you away

Each player gives one short clue per turn. On one phone you say it out loud; online you type it, up to 80 characters, with 60 seconds per turn. The starter rotates every rematch so nobody always has to go first.

A good clue is honest and a little sideways. For Bicycle, "balance" is better than "two wheels and pedals". It shows you know the word without handing it to someone who does not.

Word pairs that make it work

The game needs pairs that are close but not identical: Lion and Tiger, Coffee and Tea, Guitar and Violin. The one-phone game bundles 192 pairs in 12 themes you can mix, and the full undercover word list shows them all.

Too close and the vote is a coin toss. Too far apart and the odd word is obvious after one clue. If your group is new, start with a theme everyone knows well.

Setting up a round

On one phone: choose Words, pick the version and collections, add 3-12 players and pass the device so each person reads their card in private. Online: create a private room, share the invitation and play from separate browsers. Either way, no account is needed. Want something with questions instead of clues? Try the imposter game Spyfall.

Questions

What is the difference between undercover and imposter?

They are names for the same idea: one hidden player with a different secret. "Undercover" usually means the hidden player has a similar word; "imposter" often means they have none.

How many undercover players are there?

One per round. The vote is about finding that one player among 3-12.

Do I need to print word cards?

No. The website deals the words, hides each card until its player taps to reveal it, and keeps score across rematches.
